This is an upgrade product. To install this operating system, you must have a licensed installation of one of the following operating systems on the device where you are installing the upgrade: Windows Vista Enterprise, Business, or Ultimate; Windows XP Professional or Tablet PC; Windows 2000 Professional; Windows NT Workstation 4.0; or Windows 98. You cannot upgrade from the Home editions of Windows XP or Windows Vista. Unless you are upgrading from Windows Vista, this installation requires a "clean install." This means that if the computer has an existing operating system, you must remove all operating system files and applications, install the system, and reinstall the applications. For complete information, see Windows 7.
Windows 7 Professional requires significant system resources, as detailed below. It is likely that PCs currently running an operating system older than Windows Vista might not be able to run Windows 7. For a good start on evaluating whether to upgrade, see Windows 7.
Important Volume Licensing Information: With Windows 7, organisations can choose between two types of volume license keys for product activation: a Key Management Service (KMS) license key or a Multiple Activation Key (MAK). Organisations will be provided with a Key Management Service (KMS) key for Windows 7 by default on the Microsoft Volume Licensing website; that is, this is the only type of key an organisation will see unless they request a MAK.
A KMS key requires at least 25 computers on a network for activation. Organisations with fewer than 25 computers should request a MAK from the Volume Licensing website after receiving this product. For information about obtaining a MAK or deciding which type of key to use, see Windows 7.
Acquiring the Installation Media and License Key: Installing this product requires installation media and a license key. Installation media will be shipped to you free of charge.

OSE MLs are also available. An OSE ML allows one nonserver device to be protected by System Center Data Protection Manager. When a device has multiple OSEs, a separate ML is required for each OSE protected by Data Protection Manager.
A server ML is required for each server (that is, each device running a server operating system) protected by Data Protection Manager. The standard server ML, available through TechSoup, allows one file server to be protected by a server running System Center Data Protection Manager.
For more information about licensing Data Protection Manager, see Management Licenses in Microsoft Licensing Product Use Rights available from Microsoft Volume Licensing.
Note: This license does not require media, license keys, or setup codes.

Windows Remote Desktop Services User CAL (Includes Software Assurance)
This technology is included in Windows Server, but a Windows Remote Desktop Services client access license (CAL) is required for each device or user accessing Windows Remote Desktop Services. This is in addition to the Windows Server CAL that is required for each device or user accessing Windows Server.
This user CAL authorises a user to access Windows Remote Desktop Services from any device (for example, when an employee accesses the server from a computer at work and another at home). Device CALs are also available. A device CAL authorises one computer to access Windows Remote Desktop Services, regardless of the number of users (for example, on a shared workstation).
Windows Remote Desktop Services CALs will permit access to Windows Terminal Services, and Terminal Services CALs that were valid for Windows Server 2008 will still permit access to Windows Remote Desktop Services.
Note: This license does not require media, license keys, or setup codes.
System Center Data Protection Manager OSE Client Management License (Includes Software Assurance)
